The Georgia Environmental Protection Division says the fish kill in the Ogeechee River was caused by Columnaris. Columnaris is a bacterial disease induced by environmental stress. According to the EPD, humans are not known to be affected by the disease.

The cause of the environmental stress is still unknown so the EPD is advising everyone to stay out of the water in Bryan, Bulloch, Chatham, Effingham, and Screven county.
