Sheriff: Mother of murder suspect showed courage | News
STATESBORO, GA (WTOC)-
Frank Walters entered magistrate court Wednesday to hear the charges against him. He's accused of murdering his girlfriend, Deidra Thompson, in her house then sexually assaulting a young girl who also lived there. Investigators contend Walters took the girl to his family's house outside Sylvania. When he told relatives what had happened, his mother called Screven County sheriff Mike Kile.
"She called me and told me her son had killed this girl over in Statesboro. So I called Statesboro and Bulloch County to see if they'd had a murder reported over there and they said they didn't," Kile recalled.
Kile said he and the mother met Bulloch County deputies at Thompson's house and found her body. They returned to Screven County to find Walters hiding in the woods and convinced him to surrender.
"It took a tremendous amount of courage on her (Walters' mother) part to give her son up. That's her son and she loves him very dearly" the sheriff stated.
Sheriff Kile was already familiar with Walters, not from any previous arrests but because his mother had worked a few years ago at the sheriff's office.
The sheriff said he can't imagine what prompted Walters to shoot and kill Thompson then assault the teen. But he figured this suspect had heard about cases and consequences from his mom.
"She's probably talked about cases from here at home," he noted. "He's realized that he's going to spend a long long time in jail before he can even think about coming out, if he ever comes out."
Walters faces charges of murder, rape, aggravated assault, aggravated child molestation, enticing a child, credit card fraud, and more. He will remain in the Bulloch County jail while the court appoints a defense attorney and that attorney requests a bond hearing.
